It’s a fact of life: driving during winter weather conditions is much more dangerous than when conditions are ideal. And, while most drivers understand this, the rate of weather-related car accidents in New Hampshire remains high.
In fact, just recently, a New Hampshire news report discussed several winter-weather car accidents occurring throughout the state during and after a storm. In total, there were dozens of car accidents, most of which were caused by icy and snowy conditions. For example, a rollover was reported near Exit 2 on Interstate 89, and New Hampshire State Police reported I-89 was “all backed up” due to this, and various other accidents.
What Are Drivers’ Responsibilities During Inclement Weather? While most drivers are aware of what their obligations are during normal driving conditions, too often, motorists are unaware of their duties when conditions are less than ideal. For example, the posted speed limit assumes ideal conditions. Thus, when snow rolls in, visibility is reduced, or the roads are slick, traveling at the speed limit may be dangerous. Thus, drivers are responsible for reducing their speed—even to below the posted speed limit—when the conditions require it.
Additionally, drivers should allow more room in between their car and the vehicle in front of them. In fact, many New Hampshire winter-weather accidents turn into chain-reaction car accidents because once a driver notices that there is a collision up ahead, they do not have time to stop. This can complicate a rear-driver’s ability to recover compensation from another at-fault driver, as they may be considered to have been negligent for following too closely.
Turns pose another major hazard when road conditions are slick. Drivers get used to how their vehicle handles on dry pavement, and often push their vehicle’s capabilities to their maximum by speeding around corners. However, when roads are wet or icy, a quick turn will often result in a motorist spinning out, losing control of their vehicle. While this often means the driver slides off the road, sometimes it can send the vehicle into oncoming traffic, a pedestrian, or a stationary object such as a utility pole.
The bottom line is that New Hampshire drivers must take special care when driving during inclement weather. And those drivers who cause an accident during icy road conditions may be held liable through a personal injury lawsuit.
