Lithium-Ion Batteries Pose Explosion and Fire Risk to New Hampshire Residents
January 18, 2022
Lithium-ion batteries offer significant advantages over other batteries, and many common consumer products use these cells. However, despite the benefits of lithium batteries, they can pose significant hazards, including the risk of explosion and fire. New Hampshire consumers who suffer injuries from a lithium-ion battery should contact an experienced attorney to discuss holding the responsibility entity responsible for damages.
Lithium battery refers to electronically connected cells that contain a positive electrode, a negative electrode, a separator and an electrolyte solution. The solutions allow the ion to flow between the electrodes freely. Although many of these batteries are safe, defective batteries present the risk of an explosion. Last year more than 100 fires stemmed from e-bike explosions; these accidents caused 79 injuries and four fatalities.
In response to a growing number of lithium-ion battery explosions, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) engaged in a ‘High Energy Density Batteries Project”. The findings indicated that more than 400 types of lithium-ion cells resulted in over 25,000 overheating incidents over the past five years. In addition, the CPSC issued warnings notifying the public not to purchase loose 18650 lithium-ion batteries.
While the explosion can vary in severity, a recent lithium battery explosion caused a devastating apartment building fire. According to national news reports, a lithium battery in an electric bike exploded, causing a fire to spread through a large apartment building. The blaze caused fire, smoke, and water damage. While investigators are unclear on the lithium battery’s make, they know that the explosion occurred while the battery was charging an electronic device.
Lithium battery damage can occur during manufacturer, distribution, or after the consumer uses the item. Any physical damage such as crushing, puncturing, or dropping can result in a slow leak and subsequent explosion. Further, external heat sources or exposure to high heat can quicken failure and fires. Although manufacturers provide consumers with warnings, these companies are also responsible for defective products or unclear directions. Companies who fail to meet safety standards or negligently design, manufacture, or distribute a battery may be liable for injuries stemming from the unsafe product.
These claims require an extensive understanding of New Hampshire’s complex product liability laws. An attorney can assist injury victims and their families in pursuing and securing appropriate compensation for their injuries and losses.
